You can use kilograms, pounds, or another consistent unit.
Example
Suppose your starting weight was:
200 lb
Your current weight is:
180 lb
First calculate the weight lost:
200 − 180 = 20 lb
Then divide by your starting weight:
20 ÷ 200 × 100 = 10%

Step 1: Record your starting weight
Use the weight from the beginning of the period you want to measure.

(75 − 68) ÷ 75 × 100

Starting Weight vs Current Weight
The starting weight is the reference point.
If you change the starting point, your calculated percentage changes even if your current weight remains the same.
For example, suppose you weigh 80 kg today.
If you started at 100 kg:
(100 − 80) ÷ 100 × 100 = 20%
But if you started at 90 kg:
(90 − 80) ÷ 90 × 100 = 11.1%
The current weight is identical, but the percentage is different because the starting weight is different.
Weight Loss Percentage vs Pounds or Kilograms Lost
Pounds or kilograms lost tell you the absolute amount of weight that changed.
Weight-loss percentage tells you the relative amount.
Consider two people:
- Person A starts at 100 kg and loses 10 kg.

Both lost 10 kg, but their percentage losses are very different.
Person A:

Pounds vs Kilograms
You do not need to convert pounds to kilograms before calculating weight-loss percentage.

For pounds:

For kilograms:

These two measurements are often confused.
Weight-loss percentage measures how much total body weight has changed relative to your starting weight.
Body-fat percentage estimates what proportion of your current body weight is fat.
They answer different questions.
For example, someone might lose 8% of their starting weight without knowing exactly how much of that loss came from fat, water, glycogen, or lean tissue.
This is why a weight-loss percentage should not automatically be described as a percentage of fat lost.

If you know your actual fat mass at two points in time, the percentage of fat mass lost can be calculated as:
Fat mass loss percentage = (Starting fat mass − Current fat mass) ÷ Starting fat mass × 100
For example, if estimated fat mass decreased from 25 kg to 20 kg:
(25 − 20) ÷ 25 × 100 = 20%
That means fat mass decreased by 20% relative to its starting value.
