Ideal Body Weight vs BMI: What's the Difference?
Ideal body weight and BMI (body mass index) are often mentioned together when people want to understand whether their weight is appropriate for their height. However, they are not the same measurement and they answer different questions.
An ideal body weight calculation usually produces an estimated reference weight from height and, depending on the formula, sex. BMI compares a person's current weight with their height and places the result into a standard adult category.
What Is Ideal Body Weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is a formula-based estimate of a reference weight. Several equations exist, so the result can depend on which formula is selected.
One commonly used equation is the Devine formula:
- Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet
- Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet
For example, using the Devine equation, a man who is 5 feet 10 inches tall has an estimated ideal body weight of:
50 + (2.3 × 10) = 73 kg
It is an estimate from a particular equation and does not directly measure body fat or muscle mass.
What Is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) is a numerical value based on a person's weight and height.
The formula is:
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters²
For example, a person weighing 70 kg and measuring 1.75 m has:
70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9
For adults, BMI is commonly interpreted using standard categories:

How BMI Is Calculated
BMI uses two measurements: weight and height.
If weight is measured in kilograms and height in meters:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
For example, suppose a woman weighs 65 kg and is 1.65 m tall:
BMI = 65 ÷ (1.65 × 1.65)
BMI = 23.9

How Ideal Body Weight Is Calculated
Ideal body weight is calculated differently from BMI.
The Devine equation uses a base weight at 5 feet and then adds an amount for each inch above 5 feet.
For example, for a woman who is 5 feet 6 inches:
IBW = 45.5 + (2.3 × 6)
IBW = 59.3 kg
The result is an estimated reference weight.

Ideal Weight vs BMI
The easiest way to understand the difference is to look at what each measurement represents.

Adult BMI cutoffs are therefore not different simply because someone is female. A "good BMI for women" can include many values within the healthy-weight category.
Why BMI Does Not Measure Body Fat Directly
BMI is calculated from height and weight. It does not measure fat tissue directly.

A person with a large amount of muscle may have a relatively high BMI because muscle contributes to body weight. On the other hand, a person with less muscle mass may have a BMI within the standard range while carrying a higher proportion of body fat.
BMI also does not show where fat is stored. Waist circumference can provide additional information about abdominal fat and health risk.
Why Two People With the Same BMI Can Look Different
Two people can have exactly the same BMI while having very different body compositions.
Imagine two adults with a BMI of 27:
- One may have relatively high muscle mass and moderate body fat.
- Another may have less muscle and a higher proportion of body fat.
Their BMI is identical because BMI only uses height and weight.
This is why body composition can differ even when two people have the same BMI.
BMI is useful because it is simple and standardized, but it should not be treated as a complete description of someone's body.
Which Measurement Should You Use?
For general adult weight screening, BMI is usually more useful than a single ideal-weight number because it provides a standardized range rather than one formula-based target. Combining BMI With Other Measurements
A more complete picture can come from combining several measurements.
Depending on the situation, useful information can include:
- BMI

- Body-fat percentage
- Weight history
- Physical activity
- Blood pressure
- Blood glucose
- Cholesterol
- Medical history
